Hi, I'm Carl.

I'm a software and DevOps engineer by profession, a musician by inclination, and a maker because I enjoy figuring out how things work and how to build them.

I grew up in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, where I developed an appreciation for both the outdoors and the satisfaction of building things with my own hands. Since 2005 I've worked professionally in software engineering. I enjoy solving problems with code just as much as building software itself.

For most of my twenties, I pursued two careers at the same time. While working as a software engineer, I was also performing professionally as a bassist after growing up playing jazz. Bass is still my primary instrument, whether it's electric or upright, though I've picked up a few others along the way. I've also been interested in electronic music production since my teens, and more recently I've started building modular synthesizers from kits—with plans to eventually design a few modules of my own.

Outside of technology and music, I like staying curious. I've visited all 48 contiguous states and enjoy hiking, backpacking, exploring new places, or playing a casual round of disc golf with friends. The score is usually secondary to spending time outdoors.

I also box. I'm not especially good at it, but I enjoy the challenge and the opportunity to keep learning.

I've always enjoyed helping friends and family with projects, whether that's solving a software problem, fixing something around the house, building something new, or simply lending an extra set of hands.

When I'm not building something, you'll probably find me reading science fiction, watching a good sci-fi series, or relaxing with a video game after a productive day. I tend to find something to appreciate in almost every kind of music, art, or storytelling.

One idea that's stayed with me over the years is that most questions are more interesting when viewed from multiple perspectives. I try to stay curious, keep an open mind, and remember that there's usually more than one way to look at a problem.

Friends and family are a priority in my life. So is Boots, my cat, who became my roommate after I rescued her from oncoming traffic. She followed me home, and we've been friends ever since.
